Why Sharks? Sharks have been around for more than 350 million years and many current species date back to the Jurassic period. It is just now, in our lifetime, that they are threatened with extinction. Sharks may seem like the last species that needs our help when in fact it is estimated that their numbers have been reduced by 90% over the last few decades. About half the sharks killed every year are killed through modern fishing practices that indiscriminately kill sharks, dolphins, and sea turtles in the process of trying to catch commercially viable fish. As a top predator in our seas, the shark (especially the Great White Shark) is a key balancing element in the marine food chain. When sharks are taken out of the mix, the entire ocean suffers. Some species, like crayfish, can disappear altogether while the numbers of others, such as octopi, balloon out of control. To learn more about sharks and their importance to our oceans, please visit: www.sharks.org or www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sharks/ For the opportunity to dive with Great White Sharks, we encourage you to choose responsible dive operations, such as the following – Absolute Adventures and Shark Adventures |
